EMBODYING THE ANCIENT WISDOM
OF THE MAYAN SACRED CALENDAR

There are less than eleven years left until December 21, 2012, the Winter Solstice day when one World Age will end and another will begin. So say timekeepers of the Mayan sacred calendar, universally acknowledged as one of the most sophisticated, accurate and mysterious calendars ever created by Man. And if what these timekeepers say is true, what, if anything, are we to do with this information?

The notion of World Ages is at the core of all Mesoamerican calendars, whether they be Toltec, Aztec or Maya. It is a notion directly related to the spin of the Earth's axis through galactic space on a 26,000 year cyclic journey. To keep people on track with such a grand cosmic journey, Mayan astronomers used the precise path of the December solstice Sun against the backdrop of the Milky Way, as the celestial significator obvious enough to make this knowledge transferable from generation to generation. And to make sure that the precise importance of the day December 21, 2012 was not overlooked, Mayan lords encoded into both their sacred calendar and their sacred architecture, the celestial knowledge that on that date, the Sun would position itself precisely in a portion of space referred to by them as "The Heart of Creation."

The whole of the Mayan sacred calendar tradition is aimed at making intelligible to humanity, the super conscious energy and information emanating from the Heart of Creation, also referred to by them as Hunab Ku, the One Giver of Movement and Measure. Intensity is a major challenge in this quest for just as most of us are physically unable to stare directly into the Sun for any length of time, most of us are also unable to align directly with the superabundance of meta-physical energy and information coming to us through this same grand intermediary. We must instead, look to the Sun's complementary consort, the Moon, for a safe haven of alignment.

The Moon is humanity's most accessible ally in any quest to comprehend and embody the vast cosmic messages streaming through the Sun to the Earth. For, unlike the Sun which bursts forth with formless effulgence, the Moon works through gentleness and gradual process to bring this effulgence into form on planet Earth. Process is, of course, Moon's forte and she would have us learn about Galactic Process by aligning with her on a day-to-day basis, over many Moons. She would have us learn about change and transformation through her waxing and waning, through her emptiness and her fullness. She would have us ascend in consciousness, one small step at a time.

What then of December 21, 2012? Can the Moon guide us into right relationship to its abstract and transcendent meaning ? I believe so, and I believe she can guide us into right relationship to what is essentially a momentous cosmic psychodrama already unfolding on planet Earth. A key to unlocking your part in the drama is to be found in the precise phase of the Moon you were born at. The phase of the Moon at your birth represents a balanced integration of your masculine (Solar) and feminine (Lunar) natures. That phase occurs within one of the four main sectors of the lunation cycle and corresponds to one of four hieroglyphs from the Mayan Sacred Calendar.

Although a determination of the exact phase of the Moon at the time of your birth will require the services of a competent astrologer, you can determine the general phase relationship by using the following website provided by the U.S. Naval Observatory, Astronomical Applications Department: Phases of the Moon. Simply locate the week within which you were born. This will tell you which of the four major sectors of the lunar cycle you were born into. Relate that phase to its corresponding hieroglyph as follows, and you will have taken a first step toward deciphering an abundance of Solar/galactic information aligned directly with the moment of your first breath.

NEW MOON TO FIRST QUARTER

This sector of the Moon's cycle is aligned with hieroglyph CHICCHAN, representing the SERPENT MIND. It is associated with the PHYSICAL BODY and its instinctual knowing. People born in this quadrant discover themselves through spontaneous action and through training in complex behavior patterns. There is here, a wisdom of the body and of the race.

THE AGE OF FLOWERS

Although each of us is born into a particular sector of the lunation cycle, we are meant to "travel the wheel" over the course of our life and thereby encounter all four minds. By integrating all four through the common center they share, one is able to activate and fulfill a unique and very personal aspect of the current World Age, the Age of the Center. In doing so over many Moons, one is mysteriously released into the coming Sixth Age of Solar Consciousness: the Age of Flowers.
