Earth Child
by Dwayne Edward Rourke
From the moment we humans take our very first breath, a culture-of-birth conditions a primary path of development for us. As we mature within that culture, however, alternate paths inevitably present themselves and for many of us, the urge to transformation causes us to abandon the status quo to undergo an often painful process of individuation. Responding to deeper and deeper levels of our life's calling and purpose, we transforming individuals break the cultural spell cast upon us as children and embark upon a journey into the unknown. We become increasingly concerned with fulfilling the purpose for which we were born. We seek to know ourselves as Earth Children: sons and daughters of a universal humanity dwelling at the center of the Earth.
Ultimately our life purpose transcends, yet includes, any local, cultural identity we have taken on. The journey of individuation, which brings us into greater and greater alignment with this purpose, can be long and arduous. Navigational tools are needed along the way. Each person must choose his or her own. On my own journey of individuation, no tools have been more valuable than those provided by the mother of all sciences: astrology.
There are many astrologies, just as there are many astrologers. One astrologer who stands out amongst all astrologers of the modern era is Dane Rudhyar. In a dedicated writing career spanning more than half of the twentieth century, Rudhyar almost single-handedly pioneered a humanistic, person-centered astrology appropriate to the global era in which we now live.
I myself was introduced to Rudhyar's astrological and philosophical work at the age of 24. I was completely inspired by it and for more than thirty years now, have been exploring and building upon the broad metaphysical foundation he, and a handful of others, created. Central to the astrological component of that foundation, are three celestial bodies: Sun, Moon and Earth. Their interrelationship creates what I call the Earth Child, the universal human being who lives at the core of every human psyche.
Your Earth Child was present with you the moment you took your first breath and has been with you ever since, regardless of whether you have been aware of it or not. Your Earth Child is androgynous, meaning that it harmoniously blends your masculine nature (Father Sun) and your feminine nature (Mother Moon) through the integrating and stabilizing factor of the Earth (Child).
The Moon is the fastest moving of the major planetary bodies tracked in astrology. Unlike the broad, multi-generational influences of the outer, trans-personal planets like Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, for example, the Moon, and more specifically, its many phases, refers to what is most personal in our lives. One of those phases is specific to you and can be seen as a spiritual birthright. It is a key factor in revelation of your androgynous Earth Child.
Phases of the MoonThe phase of the Moon at your birth reappears every 29.5 days, thus giving you thirteen Moon phase birthdays a year! And for the whole of your life, each of these recurring birthdays is an opportunity for you to resonate consciously and deeply with the universal harmony inherent in the Moon phase itself. Further, from this single astrological doorway and its relationship to the whole cycle of Moon phases, a whole world of connections revealing what the ancients referred to as the "harmony of the spheres," can be determined.
Drawing that harmony down and into your own direct experience, through uniquely personal rituals of attunement, is what will expand your relationship to your Earth Child. Those rituals can take unlimited form, hence, what emerges is a very personalized spiritual practice guided by principles of universal harmony. Ideally, adopting and sustaining such a practice will lead you to more deeply understand your place in the planet-wide emergence of the universal humanity struggling to be born at this time.

Simply knowing the timing of the phase of the Moon at your birth will be adequate for you to begin your journey of resonant attunement. Once you determine your birth phase as the number of days after a New or Full Moon, keeping track of your Moon phase birthday will be relatively easy as most calendars give this basic information.
