EARTH CHILD EMERGENCE

Follow your bliss and the universe will open doors where there were only walls.

Joseph Campbell

From the moment we humans take our first breath, we are conditioned in our psychological development by our culture-of-birth. As we mature within that culture, however, alternate paths of development inevitably present themselves. Mysteriously, for some of us, this triggers a compelling urge to abandon the status quo in favor of undertaking what is often a long and arduous process. Responding to a deep spiritual calling we break the cultural spell cast upon us as children and begin a journey of self-discovery. If successful, we come to know ourselves not simply as residents of a particular geographical area, or as proponents of a particular faith or cultural tradition. Rather, we come to know ourselves as children of the Earth.

Fulfilling our identities as Earth people requires that we come into greater and greater alignment with a purpose that transcends any parochial identity we have previously taken on. This is known as the journey of individuation and each person who takes it must choose his or her own way. For many people, myself included, no tools along the way have proven to be more valuable than those provided by one of the most ancient and enduring of all human endeavors: astrology.

Each and every prior civilization to our own has developed its own astrology but none has had to encompass so much as our own! The need for an astrology capable of meeting the psychological needs of a universalized humanity was a need fully perceived early in the 20th century by a man whose monumental resolve to help make this happen, yielded an equally monumental legacy of completed works. His name is Dane Rudhyar and it was he who, in a dedicated career spanning more than half of the twentieth century, almost single-handedly formulated the foundation of an astrology appropriate to the global era in which we live.

I was introduced to Rudhyar’s astrological and philosophical works early in my twenties. His "person-centered" approach provided me with a profound sense of mystical participation in a great Work that extended out and beyond my lifetime. Empowered by that Work, I too am now coming forth to make a contribution to it. In the following pages, I will share with you the story of my development of a synthesis of intuitive arts comprising not only Western and Mesoamerican astrology, but also the etheric energy system of the human light body (the chakras) as well as the Chinese Book of Changes (I Ching). The story begins in the very most personal details of my life but it expands to encompass the transpersonal and the universal. Like you, I am an Earth Child emerging!

EARTH CHILDREN

In the early stages of my own process of emergence and individuation, Rudhyar's astrology played a key role in orienting me to a more inclusive awareness than my upbringing had afforded me. Consciously using the tools provided by him and a small group of associates, I gained a sense of belonging to an intentional spiritual community.

Early on, I developed a tangible sense of wholeness within my own psyche by simply dwelling on three core components of the astrological world: Sun, Moon and Earth. This felt sense of wholeness is what I now refer to as the Earth Child within.

The Earth Child is symbolic of a latent, "inner androgyne" -- a primordial awareness within each of us that naturally unites our masculine nature (Father Sun) and our feminine nature (Mother Moon). Symbolically, the union occurs through the angle linking Sun and Moon as revealed in an astrological chart cast for the time of our birth.

In my own life, this single, unified, astrological factor provided a powerful key that has opened the door to many a surprising mystery, not the least of which is the Tzolkin, central component of the Mayan Sacred Calendar tradition.

That calendar tradition focuses on December 21, 2012 as the completion date of a 5,125 year cycle. Much debate rages throughout the planet as to its true meaning and significance. What I share with you in the following pages is not directly related to that debate. Rather, what is revealed here is an entirely novel use of the Tzolkin that leads the inner journeyer into direct relationship with its many archetypes.

Much of the collective unconscious is uncharted territory. The archetypes themselves are nebulous and hard to pinpoint. They are not things or even images in themselves. Jung stressed that the archetypes should be understood as collective focal points representing a specific character or motif around which memories, events, and even external objects which partake of the same quality tend to gravitate. They are immaterial nexus points in the architecture of the human psyche.
