Artist's Statement

Dwayne & Terry

In the face of all the bad news we see on TV, read in the papers and find on the Internet, where do we find hope?  We read about humanitarian groups and inspired individuals out on the front lines fighting political injustice and its grim bedfellows of starvation, disease, and genocide. It is enough to make us hide our heads in the sand. Conversely, we might feel the urge to cash in our comfortable Canadian lifestyle to join a humanitarian group in some heart-breaking, disaster-torn corner of the world in order to do some good for those who are truly in need.

Clearly, bad news is not just “over there” but right here close to home. It hovers over the junkies on Hastings Street, the Soup Kitchens in Courtenay, the Women’s Shelter in Campbell River, dark, lonely rooms on Cortes Island. It is easy to feel powerless in the face of such a gloomy picture.

We begin to ask: “What can I do to help those in need? Am I part of the problem or part of the solution?” Empowerment to respond lies in the recognition of out latent capacities, whether they are physical strength, superior intellect, or the ability to catch a vision and express it. If we were to use these special capacities to make the world a better place, what would our lives look like? How would they change?

As artists attempting to address these questions, we find that Love provides many of the answers. In fact, we agree with visionary artist Alex Grey when he declares that “art is love made manifest.” It seems clear to us that with more Love and compassion in the world, there could be food, water, and shelter for everyone. We are encouraging other people to be transformed by love. Through that transformation, people will begin to act compassionately towards each other. It is this shift in focus that will enable people to have their most basic needs met.

As we have endeavored to express our authentic selves within the context of our own relationship, we have learned that its positive effects ripple outwards indefinitely. We understand that through the crucible of our primary relationship, we have an ever-present opportunity to learn compassion and unconditional love for all humanity. Ultimately, we are in relationship to every being on the planet.

This quest for personal transformation through relationship may seem like a very lofty and unreachable goal within the context of the here and now cares and worries of ordinary life but the journey is every bit as important as the destination. Recognizing this fact, we have chosen to paint together on the same canvas at the time of each New Moon. A Symphony of 13 Moons is a multi-media ritual theater event inspired by a portion of this ongoing journey. We humbly offer it to you in the hope that it does some good in the world.
