THE LUNA-TZOLKIN JOURNEY

THIS IS A PORTION OF A SKETCH FROM MY ORIGINAL MAYAN CALENDAR REVELATORY EXPERIENCE, MARCH 5, 1986.
My written notes on the diagram are as follows:I CHING as LIFE CYCLE.
MAYAN CALENDAR as COLLECTIVE RUDDER (The LIGHT CYCLE)
SPIRALS represent CONSCIOUS INDIVIDUALS, EACH ORIENTED TO THE GALAXY ACCORDING TO HIS/HER BIRTH MOMENT. ALL JOINED IN CO-OPERATION.
In 1996, I joined an Internet mailing list started by Terrence McKenna, called THE NOVELTY LIST. This has proved to be a fruitful arena for the discussion of the unique use of the Mayan calendar which I am fostering in these pages. Following, are a few excerpts from those discussions.

THE LUNA-TZOLKIN
It is possible to overlay the Tzolkin sacred calendar grid itself ( as
revealed in Earth Ascending) onto the bare-bones structure of the
Timewave (as graphed by the Timewave Zero computer program). This
overlay opens the door to a broad realm of intuitive exploration and
familiarizes the explorer with the qualitative dimension of sacred
calendrics. It allows us to venture into what Jose Arguelles, author of
Earth Ascending, calls "holonomic recollection": re-membering the
wholeness of life.
One way to begin this exploration is to use the lunation cycle (one new
moon to the next new moon) as the basic unit comprising the sacred
calendar grid. That grid has 13 numbers and 20 hieroglyphs., thus
yielding 260 combinations. A complete "calendar round" (shall we call
it a LUNA-TZOLKIN ?) is, therefore, 260 lunations in duration, or about 20
years. This "lunation " grid use is in accord with Arguelles' assertion
that the grid, as a fractal device, can be used at whatever scale we
wish. And it means that each and every lunar cycle forward or backward
in time, can be given a number/hieroglyph correspondence.
A MOMENT OF PERSONAL CONCRESCENCE
Because the calendar grid hangs together as a unit, and because the
Timewave grid does the same, it is possible to align the two systems by
choosing a common end-date. Any date is open for exploration. For
example, let us use Feb.16,2007. You might immediately ask:" "Why that
date?"
One answer to this question ( and this could be said to have relevance
only for me personally), is that it marks completion of one
"lunatzolkin," when we count ahead, 260 complete lunation cycles, from
Feb 9, 1986. That is the date of the new moon preceding spontaneous
revelation of this use of the grid, to me. In Timewave parlance this
could be termed "a point of major concrescence from which to generate the
wave". (It certainly was an all-consuming experience for me personally!)
Every new moon since that time has signaled to me, the arrival of a
predictable qualitative dimension of experience accessible through
appropriate sacred art and science.
Having chosen a common end-point, of Feb.16, 2007, we can divine the
hieroglyphic/number quality of any portion of both grids,
simultaneously. I rely heavily on Ariel Spillsbury and Michael Brynner's
excellent book THE MAYAN ORACLE for this purpose.
THIRTEEN AHAU (The End)
The last sector of the Mayan sacred calendar grid, no matter what scale
it is being applied at, and no matter what end-date we might choose, will
always evoke the same qualities. These qualities are denoted by number 13
and hieroglyph AHAU.
When we look to the Mayan Oracle for inspiration regarding this
combination, we get THIRTEEN-universal movement, wild card, unseen
forces, unexpected change, open system, touch of destiny,
interdimensional shift. More poetically, they write: "The thirteenth tone
calls forth the greater pattern. The hand of fate beckons and then
catapults you free to journey home." AHAU-union, wholeness, ascension,
unconditional love, solar mastery, Christ consciousness, language of
light, ecstasy, limitless bliss, crown chakra.
Like the Tzolkin, the Timewave posits the end of its wandering line to
signal a time of supreme novelty, supreme connectedness, negentropy, or
complexity., in a word: the Eschaton. Another term for it is the zero
point. And as Terrence McKenna, originator of the Timewave describes it,
in the Timewave Zero operating manual: "My interpretation of the zero
point is that it is the point at which the ingression into Novelty and
the degree of interconnectedness of the separate elements that comprise
the concrescence will be such that the ontological nature of time itself
will be transformed. History will end and the transcendental object that
has been drawing being into ever deeper reflections of itself since the
first moments of the existence of the Universe will finally be completely
concrescent in the three-dimensional space/time continuum. As Plato
dreamed it would, the moving image of Time will have found itself in
Eternity."
THE FIRST MOMENTS OF THE EXISTENCE OF THE UNIVERSE : ONE IMIX
The first sector of the sacred calendar grid will always evoke the
qualities associated with ONE IMIX: ONE (represented in Mayan notation
as a single dot) combined with the sacred hieroglyph IMIX (ee' meesh)
which looks a lot like a simple, open-necked garment to be worn. The
qualities associated with this sector of the grid are the qualities first
encountered by anyone first setting foot on the Lunatzolkin journey.
For number ONE the Mayan Oracle offers the following keywords:
unconditional love, the one heart, indivisible essence, core vibration,
new beginnings, chalice of the infinite, All That Is. It also says that
"One is the ray of unity with self and Source". A poetic invitation
associated with ONE is also offered: "Open your heart in unconditional
love, as a chalice for Indivisible Essence. Let the sacrament of unity be
served in you."
Regarding the hieroglyph IMIX , The Mayan Oracle has the following poetic
offering. This is only one portion of a longer poem in a section called
The Magical Child :
"I Am Imix, Primal Mother.
Still, dark womb of the patterned potential of becoming,
sacred, interstellar genesis, I Am.
Nourishing, fertile abyss, I birth you.
Benevolent, my mighty cauldron of primal waters,
enveloping the living seed.
Eternal is my embrace.
PRESENT MOMENT: EIGHT ETZNAB
I have taken to celebrating each new moon in a ritual way, welcoming
the arrival of the new spiritual qualities as referenced in the calendar
grid. Last new moon found me in a yurt, in the woods just outside of
Victoria B.C., mindfully welcoming the new moon energy through
meditation, drumming, dance, song and story. I was joined in this
adventure by 25 other people. We invoked the qualities associated with
number EIGHT and hieroglyph ETZNAB. The experience we had that night
continues to empower me now as I share this information with you at the
full moon portion of the current lunar cycle. The qualities accessed by
us at new moon continue to be available planet-wide, during this complete
cycle. You may want to invoke some of them right now by pondering on the
nature of the current grid correlation: EIGHT ETZNAB : EIGHT-
empowerment, galactic grid, path of the one heart.; ETZNAB-timelessness,
discrimination, clarity, hall of mirrors, spiritual warriorship, sword of
truth, facing shadow, integration of paradox.
FUTURE MOMENT : NINE CAUAC
If any of you are interested, I could regularly post the grid
correspondences for upcomig lunations. I would do this in the dark moon
or "seed" phase of each lunar cycle. Let me know if this is valuable to
you.

We live in a time when diverse calendars co-exist, each with its own purpose! From your comments, it appears that you are finding the Holly Davison calendar to be providing you with useful memory-activating sustenance. And I am assuming this calendar to be a manifestation of Arguelles' Dreamspell initiative, a total reworking of the terminology presented by him in his original presentation of the Mayan sacred calendar in Earth Ascending and in the Mayan Factor. I, for one, prefer the original terminology, and its elaboration in the Mayan Oracle by Spillsbury & Brynner.

You will find the Dreamspell calendar etc. to be based on a repeating cycle of 260 DAYS. As of yet, I have not encountered either a traditional nor a contemporary use of the Tzolkin as a repeating cycle of 260 LUNATIONS. This use was revealed to me as a direct result of working with the symbols themselves . I have always felt that this use was Spirit's answer to my call for simplicity within the overwhelming complexity I experienced upon initially being exposed to the 260. That simplicity came in the form of a vision of the path ahead for me:the Luna-Tzolkin journey I spoke of in my post here ( NOVELTY Digest - 26 Mar 1997 to 27 Mar 1997). The basic core of each posting will consist of the number and hieroglyph for the upcoming lunation cycle. For example, we are just now completing the disseminating phase of the current lunation; 8 ETZNAB. Keywords are as follows:

Healing
Fertility
Marriage
Wholeness
Galactic grid
Re-orientation
Unions formed
Harmonic resonance

Since the time of first setting foot on the Luna-Tzolkin path , it has been kind of like receiving a HIEROGLYPHIC CARE PACKAGE at each new moon. I am given a whole lunation cycle to open the package and receive its contents, and to take note of significant inner/outer correspondences. Of course, explorations of correspondences in the past and the future are always possible, but the lunar cycle by lunar cyle rhythm is very satisfying in a long-term committment kind of way.
I have always felt that what I was given was not just for my own use. I will be happy to share my CARE package with you each month as the new moon approaches.
EARLIER HEAVEN/LATER HEAVEN

I have not seen the video you mention but would be interested in doing so. Where could I order it?
I don't know what sequence Jose' refers to here but we commonly find two circular arrangements of the I Ching: the King Wen sequence (Later Heaven) and the Fu-Shi sequence (Earlier Heaven). According to Marysol Gonzalez Sterling ( Madrid Spain) author of "I Ching & Transpersonal Astrology" (p.13):
"The first circular arrangement was created by Fu-Shi and is called the Earlier Heaven. It is the beginning of the universe, which exists at first in a state of dreams and thoughts. It later materializes, and this shows in the Later Heaven created and studied by King-Wen, where the positions of the light-darkness pulsation create distortions of the senses into contradictions."
I CHING/LUNA-TZOLKIN
At the 7th moon of the first lunar year of the Luna-Tzolkin journey, a key was reveled to me that opens a doorway into a some of the inner mysteries of the Tzolkin/I Ching synthesis shown in Earth Ascending. It is astrologically-based and gives each participant on this journey a life-long symbol of relevance: a birth hexagram from the Earlier Heaven arrangement. That hexagram is based on the phase of the moon at the moment of our birth. By meditating on this hexagram, especially every lunar month at the phase of the moon resonant with our birth phase, we can be guided into a state of re-membrance of our cosmic origins within the realm of Earlier Heaven.
This form of self-remembering is similar to what you are experiencing with the Dreamspell symbols. It is also in complete accord with Arguelles' general assertion in Earth Ascending that:
"These systems- Tzolkin, DNA, and I Ching- are all memory-generating patterns whose codes are defined by simple number relations. To unlock the memory patterns contained in these codes is the primary task of the present moment in human history."
Perhaps such an unlocking is part of the purpose of the Novelty group,. And perhaps the I Ching/Luna-Tzolkin doorway could be opened for people on this list, so that we could more fully explore the systemic integration of Timewave/Tzolkin/I Ching/DNA etc.

I have no conscious stand against the Dreamspell. I understand that some
people like John Major Jenkins do and he voices it quite vehemently. I
have not used the Dreamspell primarily because I only have so much time
to devote to theses studies. Arguelles has been a major mentor in my
life and I honor him deeply, mostly by doing as he is doing and as he
envisions others doing. In the Mayan Factor, p.192, he writes:
"As more of us learn to navigate the galactic median through skilled use
of resonant harmonic frequencies, we will merge into the greater life.
Direct psycho-sensory encounters with vistas more real and vast than
those hinted at by our radio-telescopes will naturally dissolve those
values that now bind us, by fear, to name and place. As we experience
instead the fullness of the meaning of universal life, selflessness and
compassion will draw us on. As resonant navigators, we shall encounter
the great ones of our myths, and the dream-time will envelop us in all
its subtle richness. Techniques and insights developed by the great
mystic traditions will be at the forefront of our activities, and where
once we sank in dread for fear of death, we shall come to know again that
continuity of being that makes the same wholeness out of each and every
one of us."

From a very ineffable presence. Perhaps some of these words point in
the right direction: "Greater Reality of Spirit", "Great Mystery" ,
"The Void", The Godhead", "The Creator", "Hunab Ku", "Great Mother
Earth" etc.

A big question . I can only begin.....
For sure, one similarity is the basic core symbolism . Jose' and I
are both using the sacred Tzolkin calendar, and the I Ching, as a primary
matrix of symbology.We are both looking to establish the 13:20 grid into
human consciousness in response to our individually-held perceptions of
its purpose and use.
A significant difference occurs with regard to the moon. When Jose uses
the term "LUNATION", he is refering to the visible moon cycle of 28
days. When I use the term "lunation " it refers to the 29.5 day cycle of
the moon, from a new moon to a new moon. This is called the synodic
cycle and is the one used by astrologer Dane Rudhyar who first introduced
it to modern astrology 50 years ago.. By continuing my attunement to the
synodic cycle of the moon I am able to sustain with an unbroken,
unfolding process, begun in 1973 when I first became attuned to the
lunation cycle through Rudhyar's book of the same name.
1973 was the same year I began using the I Ching as an oracle. 13 years
later,, at the 7th moon of the Luna-Tzolkin journey, the lunation cycle
and the I Ching merged in my mind as one and the same phenomenon,
differently expressed. When I say I Ching, I am refering to the "Earlier
Heaven" polarized array . What I "saw" at that time was that the
fundamental Creative/Receptive axis of the Earlier Heaven arrangenent,
aligned one on one with the new moon /full moon axis of the lunation
cycle. Consequently, the notion of a "lunation birthday" (the phase of
the moon at birth) now had a corresponding reference point within the
circle of polarized hexagrams making up the Earlier Heaven arrangement.
Many synchronicities flowed into my life during that first week of
realizing this connection and they continue to occur every time I do an I
Ching/lunation birthday reading.

The AC refers to the "Aboriginal Continuous" current of consciousness.
In Earth Ascending, (p.52) Jose' describes aboriginal as "meaning
innate, always beginning--capacity for the attainment of knowledge
through attunement". In a word: shamanism. Shamanism , to him, is at the
core of the "holonomic model of knowledge" and it represents "The
primordial undifferentiated synthesis of knowledge and experience". My
work emanates from this current of consciousness, however, it is not
limited to the AC alone. By its very slowly progressing way, it is
manifesting aspects of the CA, the "Civilizational Advance" current, the
current of "psychosensory elaboration". This is where the Earth Healing
ceremonies and new moon rituals I lead, come in. They are manifestations
of an emerging, global, culture-building, activity guided by an
attunement to cosmic principles (ie.lunation cycle, I Ching , Tzolkin
etc.)

The lunation birthday hexagram is perhaps even more personal than the
"galactic signature"., because it brings the reference point right down
to the moment of the first breath of the individual, rather than simply
the day of birth. The LBH provides entry into what I call the Light Body
Transformation Template where, through a transposition process, all
planets in a person's birthchart can be mapped onto the chakra tree by
seeing the six lines of the hexagrams as representing the first six
chakras. (The 7th or Crown chakra co-ordinates all of the hexagrams
at once.) The result is a consolidated body of symbols that goes deep
into the inner recesses of the ancestral memory held within each
individual. I get something new out of my own, every time I explore it.
The Dreamspell book says of the 'galactic signature' : "The name assigned
to your galactic gateway becomes your personal galactic signature.
..Your galactic signature becomes your personal Dreamspell code name."
So yes, the Lunation Birthday Hexagram is similar to the GS but takes one
into other realms. A matter of preference.

I think you are onto something. And I would like to see a variable end
date possible with that program, as with the current Timewave program.
Jose's work is very transformative. His heart is good. He is an Aquarian
brother to us all., opening up ancient knowledge with a rare passion. He
has my heartfelt respect.
